NAFI Yonsei Uni. Co-holds  GEEF x AEARU 2019 

-The Role of Higher Education for SDGs and Future Generation-


     


The National Assembly Futures Institute (President Park Jin) co-hosted the GEEF X AEARU 2019 Forum, held in Baekyang Hall of Yonsei University on October 29~30, 2019.

Distinguished guests from various sectors, including the presidents of AEARU universities, National Assembly Deputy Speaker Lee Ju-Young, former Secretary-General of the UN Ban Ki-moon, president of Yonsei University Kim Yong-Hak, president of the NAFI Park Jin, Boao Forum for Asia Secretary Li Baodong and others, discussed various topics such as the future of university education and the role of university for a sustainable future during the forum’s opening ceremony, sessions, and special declaration signing ceremony.

In a congratulatory speech at this forum, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Lee Ju-Young said, “In the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution which is characterized by a digital transformation, a change is considered as crisis, however, it could be an opportunity”. He also added, “The National Assembly established the NAFI, a research institute for future strategies, to exchange and cooperate with various researchers. I hope that the NAFI would contribute to sustainable national development by predicting and analyzing changes in the future environment through various convergence studies in accordance with the purpose of its establishment. In a welcoming speech, the president of the NAFI Park Jin also emphasized the importance of convergence in various fields and cooperation among policy departments for future generations.

The GEEF X AEARU 2019 Forum was co-hosted by the National Assembly Futures Institute, Yonsei University (Office of International Affairs/IGEE), and AEARU. The event was sponsored by the Korean National Committee for UN-Habitat and co-organized by think-tank Yeosijae Future Consensus Institute. In the session held under the theme of The Role of Higher Education for SDGs and Future Generation, a vice chief researcher of the NAFI Sung Moon-Joo participated as a panelist to suggest the direction of future education to meet the needs of the 4th industrial revolution. He added that when designing and implementing the curriculum for undergraduate and graduate school, we should consider how the curriculum affects students' lives, community, society and the world. He also pointed out that  not just life and happiness of students but also participation in the community problem solving is important. Furthermore, he argued that more effort and attention should be paid to  policy and sites to contribute to the sustainable development and building a better country.

During a toast at a gala dinner held at the Chancellor’s office at Yonsei University after the event, the President of Yonsei University Kim Yong-Hak, former Secretary-General of the UN Ban Ki-Moon, and the president of the NAFI Park Jin and others suggested plans for future cooperation, and had a meaningful time reflecting the meaning of this forum by hoping for more active exchanges and proposing actively support.
