Discussion Forum to Commemorate 3rd Anniversary Successfully Held by the National Assembly Futures Institute (NAFI)

“NAFI Will Serve as a Think Tank of the National Assembly Looking Forward to the Future of Korea”

Kim Hyeon-kon, President of the National Assembly Futures Institute (NAFI) announced that the NAFI 3rd anniversary discussion forum was successfully held on the subject of “National Future Strategy: Reflection and New Direction” at the meeting room of the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Jung-gu, Seoul on May 27 at 10:00 a.m.

“Designing the mid- to long-term national agendas is a new task that goes beyond the five-year one-term administration,” said Park Byeong-seok, Speaker of the National Assembly, in his opening address. “I hope NAFI will serve as a think tank for the National Assembly with insights of 30, 50, and 100 years.” It was followed by greetings from Yun Ho-jung, Floor Leader of the Democratic Party of Korea; Kim Gi-hyeon, Floor Leader of the People Power Party; Bae Jin-gyo, Floor Leader of the Justice Party; Gwon Eun-hee, Floor Leader of the People’s Party; Kang Min-jeong, Floor Leader of the Open Democratic Party; Yong Hye-in, Floor Leader of the Basic Income Party; and Cho Jeong-hun, Floor Leader of the Transition Korea.

President Kim gave a presentation of Korea’s future vision on the topic of “National Future Strategy: Reflection and New Direction”. He reviewed the Korea’s national future strategies for the past 60 years, and presented “Country Where All People Dream and Achieve Their Dream” as our new vision.

A discussion with Park Myung-kwang, Chairperson of the NAFI Board of Directors, as a moderator had the following panelists: Seong Gyeong-ryung, Co-chairperson of the National Mid-to-Long-Term Agenda Committee (Agenda Committee); Jeong Hae-gu, Chairperson of the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Science (NRC); Gwon Oh-gyeong, President of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea (NAEK); Yi Tae-su, Director of the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs (KIHASA); and Kim Hyeon-cheol, a professor at Seoul National University’s Graduate School of International Studies.

During the discussion session, the panelists discussed the right direction of the future vision and how to implement the future strategies. Above all, they agreed on the opinion that “value” should be weighted, without too obsessed with quantification in future research as ever.

“We will seek a new direction for mid- to long-term future researches at a level of the National Assembly, and we will do our best to ensure that NAFI, the only mid- to long-term research institute within the legislative branch celebrating its 3rd anniversary, can fulfill its role and vocation,” said Chairperson Park.

“Reflecting the opinions of today’s discussion, we Agenda Committee will do our best to present mid- to long-term development strategies different from the existing strategies and gaining public consensus,” said Co-chairperson Seong.
