Future Vision Report Interim Meeting Successfully Held by the National Mid-to-Long-Term Agenda Committee (NALTAC)

Concentrating All Competencies for the Rest of the Duration to Present the Direction of National Planning



4th general meeting of the National Mid-to-Long-Term Agenda Committee (NALTAC; Co-chairpersons: Seong Gyeong-ryung, Jeong Hae-gu & Kim Bok-cheol) was successfully held on September 14 at the reception room of the National Assembly.

Kim Bok-cheol, the new chairperson of the National Research Council of Science & Technology (NST), was appointed as the co-chairperson at the meeting. Appointment ceremony was followed by the report interim meeting of “Future Vision 2037 (Draft)”, one of the biggest project of NALTAC. NALTAC presented 4 major mid- to long-term goals at national level: “individual capacity and quality of life”, “harmonized community”, “paradigm shift and sustainable growth” and “mediation and cooperation against domestic/international conflicts”. 12 specific agendas proposed under these goad goals were as follows: (1) educational innovation, life design & lifelong learning; (2) safe and healthy society; (3) guarantee of minimum quality of life; (4) balanced regional development & decentralization; (5) a society free of discrimination; (6) work-life balance; (7) scientific and technological revolution and digital transformation; (8) carbon neutrality and sustainable environment; (9) structural transformation for qualitative growth; (10) politics for conflict resolution and future planning; (11) international strategy in the world in transition; and (12) peacemaking on the Korean Peninsula.

“The presidential election period is a time when we can settle unresolved problems and come together,” said Chairperson Seong. “It is very meaningful to propose mid- to long-term agendas for the country from the National Assembly, and we will make a report as the best as we can do during the remaining duration so that it can serve as guidelines for anyone.”

“We will strive to engage in conversation and discussion with the ruling and opposition parties and the presidential candidates of each party,” said Speaker Park Byeong-seok. “Please do your best to produce an authoritative and high-quality report with all your capabilities.”

NALTAC is an advisory body under the Speaker of the National Assembly established at the end of November 2020 to discover national tasks and future issues required to be continuously discussed beyond the five-year term of the administration. NAFI is serving as the secretariat of NALTAC. Future Vision 2037 will be released in late November.
